Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of complementary medicine. The Chinese and other eastern cultures have been using acupuncture to restore, promote and maintain good health for thousands of years. Acupuncture is suitable for all ages, including babies and children and can be used alongside conventional or other complementary medicines.

How acupuncture works

Good health is not just the absence of pain or disease. According to Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s life force energy, known as qi, moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin, known as meridians.

The flow of qi can be disturbed by any number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, anger, or grief, as well as poor nutrition, hereditary factors, infections or trauma. When qi is unbalanced, illness may result.

Acupuncture works to maintain the body’s equilibrium by focusing on all aspects of wellbeing; physical, mental, and emotional. The aim of acupuncture is to stimulate the body’s own healing response and restore its natural balance through the insertion of ultra fine needles at chosen points along the meridians. Treatment is aimed at the root of your condition, as well as at your symptoms. This approach can lead to a more permanent resolution of your problems.

What will happen in my 1st acupuncture treatment?

A first acupuncture treatment involves asking about current symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle, body diagnosis to determine any muscular tension and postural or energetic imbalances, and feeling the pulses on both wrists, followed by a treatment. This will take up to hour; subsequent treatments will take up to 45 minutes. There is usually enough time to include some massage during acupuncture treatments if required. All acupuncture needles are ultra fine, single use, sterile and disposable.
